The first part of this series of publications provides a review of the meth
ods used in fish bacteriology at the Hanover veterinary school. In addition
to sample collection techniques and cultural and biochemical examinations,
methods for testing antimicrobial resistance and serological techniques ar
e described. Both routine diagnostic work and specialist techniques on myco
bacteria and Renibacterium salmoninarum are included together with selected
results from the many years of scientific work at fish. The objective is t
o provide a practical guide for the diagnosis of bacteriological diseases o
f fish for interested microbiologists.
