Only seven years ago Mozambique was the poorest country on earth, devastate
d by a civil war that claimed an estimated one million lives and displaced
some five million people. In that war the basic infrastructure of the count
ry - its communications, commerce and health facilities - were destroyed. T
he economic cost has been estimated at US$15 billion. Today, its second dem
ocratic election held peacefully in December, Mozambique is seen as one of
Africa's success stories with a growing economy, stability and political to
lerance.
