M. Tamada et Vv. Kopenkin, A STUDY ON THE PENETRATIVE NATURE OF HADRON-INDUCED CASCADE SHOWERS IN A THICK LEAD CHAMBER, Nuclear physics. B, 494(1-2), 1997, pp. 3-18
The three-dimensional development of cascade showers in lead initiated
by high energy proton-Pb and pion-Pb interactions are calculated by a
full Monte Carlo simulation assuming a simple geometrical model for h
adron-nucleus interactions and also taking into account the exact geom
etrical structure of the Pamir thick lead chamber. It is shown that fl
uctuations in the shower development are very large but the experiment
al hadronic cascade shower transition has a more gentle slope, in shap
e, than the one calculated, and the extraordinary long penetrating sho
wers found in the experiment can not be explained by simple fluctuatio
ns of the calculated shower development. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V
