Abstract
The low energy effective Lagrangian for N = 2 supersymmetric Yang-Mill s theory, proposed by Seiberg and Witten is shown to be the unique sol ution, assuming only that supersymmetry is unbroken and that the numbe r of strong-coupling singularities is finite. Duality is then a conseq uence rather than an input. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
