Abstract
Clahsen's view on language is intimately linked with the Chomskian distinct ion between competence and performance. He uses performance to verify theor etical assumptions about the underlying structure of competence. Using most ly off-line task, he may fail to answer the question of how language is gen erated and perceived in natural situations.
