Abstract
Sustainable economic and social development requires that people participat e in the political process. India has enabling legislation which makes it m andatory for local government to include women. This article discusses the structure of panchayati raj system in Karnataka and the experiences of wome n in it. It tries to identify the barriers or impediments to the full parti cipation of women in the political process.
