The combination of reactive control with CAC or UPC has been proposed as th
e congestion control method in ATM networks. As one of these methods, the a
uthors researched the backpressure congestion control method and analyzed t
he basic performance of the two-stage model. The model consists of the cong
ested node and its next node; it was shown that the effect of congestion ca
n be reduced in traffic that does not pass through the congested node by ad
ding pushout rules to the next node.
In this article, the discussion is extended to a multistage model that incl
udes source, relay, and congested nodes, and the propagation time of conges
tion in the network, the packet loss probability, and the average packet tr
ansmission delay time are estimated by computer simulations. It is shown th
at congestion can be reduced and the propagation of the congestion state al
so can be decreased by the addition of pushout rules to backpressure conges
tion control. (C) 2000 Scripta Technica.
