Abstract
The problems and design principles of targets for the production of ra dioactive ions using various high intensity projectile beams are discu ssed. The thermal properties of the targets, including heat dissipatio n, diffusion and effusion, are covered. Particular reference is made t o the high power RIST target which has been constructed for use with a n 800 MeV proton beam at intensities of up to 100 mu A.
