The equilibrium concentrations of B(OH)(3) in the coexisting phases of wate
r and steam were measured over the temperature range 452.3 K to 643.7 K. Th
ese data were used to calculate the distribution constant K-D of B(OH)(3).
Making use of Krichevskii's function, the distribution results were compare
d with those reported for the partial molar volume of aqueous solutions of
B(OH)(3) at infinite dilution. The agreement is satisfactory, confirming th
at the two sets of data are thermodynamically consistent and also showing s
ome advantages of the use of the Krichevskii function to describe the therm
odynamic behaviour of dilute binary solutions. (C) 1999 Academic Press.
