X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy
(SIMS) have been used to probe the nature of silk and wool fibre surfaces,
in particular the tyrosine content. Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) spectrosc
opy has demonstrated the presence of free radicals in UV/ozone-treated wool
and silk and the importance of cystyl radicals in improving dyeability.
