A quick-return mechanism, which is driven by a field-oriented control perma
nent magnet (PM) synchronous servomotor, with fuzzy neural network (FNN) co
ntrol is proposed in this study. The rod and crank of the quick-return mech
anism are assumed to be rigid. First, the machine design of the motor-quick
-return mechanism is developed. Next, the kinematic analysis of the quick-r
eturn mechanism is introduced. Then, an FNN controller with varied learning
rates is implemented to control the motor-quick-return servomechanism with
out using the complex mathematical model of the motor-mechanism coupled sys
tem. Finally, experimental results are provided to demonstrate the effectiv
