Metal-assisted borane condensation is demonstrated by the formation of the
hexaborane(12) analogue arachno-2,5-{Cp*IrH}(2)B4H8 (3) by the reaction of
two BH3.THF moieties with the metal centers of the tetraborane(10) analogue
{Cp*IrH}(2)(mu-H)B2H5 (1). Mild thermolysis of 3, which contains separated
B2H4 fragments, results in H-2 elimination and the formation of the hexabo
rane(10) analogue nido-1,2-{Cp*Ir}(2)(mu-H)-B4H7 (2), containing a contiguo
us B4H7 fragment.
