Abstract
This essay attempts to re-connect conventional 'positivist' historiography with an overarching theoretical framework. Accordingly, it is claimed that a central element in any conventional theory of historiography must be the sensory basis of concepts - a claim which runs counter to the post-structur alist contention that concepts are created in a discursive universe with no connection to sensory 'reality'.
