Restoration of fertility in backcross progeny of barley-wheat hybrids Hordeum vulgare L-(2n=14) x Triticum aestivum L-(2n=42) in relation to wheat genotypes involved in backcrosses
La. Pershina et al., Restoration of fertility in backcross progeny of barley-wheat hybrids Hordeum vulgare L-(2n=14) x Triticum aestivum L-(2n=42) in relation to wheat genotypes involved in backcrosses, RUSS J GEN, 35(2), 1999, pp. 176-183
The ability of BC1-BC8 backcross progeny of barley-wheat hybrids Hordeum vu
lgare L. x Triticum aestivum L. (Nepolegayushchii x Saratovskaya 29 and ya-
319 x Saratovskaya 29) to exhibit fertility depending on the genotypes of c
ommon wheat involved in backcrosses was studied. Female sterility specific
to F-1 hybrids was manifested virtually in all backcross generations; howev
er, in advanced backcrosses, the frequency of self-sterile and male-sterile
plants increased. When the wheat cultivar Saratovskaya 29 was involved in
backcrosses with hybrids, plants that set single seeds upon selfing appeare
d in the BC3-BC6. Plants grown from these seeds were self-sterile. When oth
er wheat cultivars (Mironovskaya 10, Mironovskaya 808, Pyrotrix 28, Ul'yano
vka) were involved in backcrosses, plants with restored fertility were isol
ated in the BC3-BC4. In this work, new alloplasmatic wheat lines with the c
ytoplasm of cultivated barley were obtained.
