The reaction of alpha-chloromethylnaphthalene with various olefins in the p
resence of palladium acetate produces three different kinds of products. Th
e coupling products with the olefinic bond conjugated to the naphthalene ri
ng are the major products for the reactions of most olefins. An unusual rea
rrangement product formed via a cyclopalladation intermediate is isolated f
rom the reactions of the two N-vinyl olefins. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd
