The article presents background, key concepts, and treatment implications o
f a constuctive narrative approach and core tasks of psychotherapy with pat
ients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), The approach proposes that
the language individuals use, the metaphors they employ, have important im
plications for how they appraise traumatic events and how they construct na
rratives. The aim of the therapy is to begin to tell new stories that move
patients from viewing themselves as 'victims' to becoming 'survivors'.
