Magnetic excitations of cobalt-based nanowires are investigated by measurin
g the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation (SLR) of Co-59 in zero and 1 T applie
d field. Co/Cu multilayers are shown to have a faster SLR than bulk Co. Thi
s relaxation is of magnetic origin and due to the layered structure. Oxidiz
ed wires have a temperature dependence of the SLR which provides direct evi
dence of the thermal fluctuation of the uncompensated spins of the CoO grai
ns at the surface of the wires. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. [S0
