Abstract
We describe an experiment designed to determine the symmetry of the pa iring state in the cuprate superconductors. By studying the magnetic f lux modulation of a dc SQUID formed by connecting tunnel junctions on the orthogonal faces of a YBCO single crystal with the conventional su perconductor Pb, we can measure the spatial anisotropy of the phase of the order parameter. Preliminary results are complicated by SQUID asy mmetries, but show evidence for a phase shift of pi that is predicted for the d(x2-y2) pairing state.
