A. Kezar et D. Moriarty, Expanding our understanding of student leadership development: A study exploring gender and ethnic identity, J COLL STUD, 41(1), 2000, pp. 55-69
The authors propose that student affairs practitioners need to rethink some
of the key assumptions of their Leadership development models and practice
s in order to meet the needs of a changing student body. The study is based
on the CIRP 1987 Freshman Survey and 1991 Follow up. The sample included 9
,731 students at 352 institutions. The results of this study illustrate tha
t different strategies are necessary for the development of leadership amon
g a diverse group of students. Specific extracurricular and co-curricular p
rograms are recommended for meeting these needs.
