Abstract
The newly developed R-matrix Roquet theory of harmonic generation is a pplied to magnesium in its ground state for the case where three photo ns are needed to reach the first ionization threshold in the perturbat ive limit. Results are presented both for multiphoton ionization and f or harmonic generation where the influence of the low-lying autoionizi ng states is studied. The results are compared at a qualitative level with those from recent experiments and from other calculations.
