Use of HVDC and FACTS

The fast development of power electronics based on new and powerful semicon ductor devices has led to innovative technologies, such as high voltage de transmission (HVDC) and flexible ac transmission system (FACTS), which can be applied ill transmission and distribution systems. The technical and eco nomical benefits of these technologies represent an alternative to the appl ication in ac systems. Deregulation in the power industry and opening of th e market for delivery of cheaper energy to die customers is creating additi onal requirements for the operation of power systems. HVDC and FACTS offer major advantages in meeting these requirements.
