Production and acceleration system of multiply charged C-60 and C-70 fuller
ene ions are being designed for basic studies on cluster physics. Multiply
charged fullerene ions are produced by electron impacts. Ions selected by t
he analyzing magnet are accelerated up to 100 kV through an acceleration co
lumn. The ion source generates C-60(+)(8.4 nA), C-60(2+)(4.5 nA), C-60(3+)(
1.6 nA). C-60(+), C-60(2+), and C-60(3+) are accelerated up to 100, 200, an
d 300 keV, respectively. The alternating phase focus (APF)-interdigital H-m
ode (IH) linac was designed to accelerate C-60(+) ion (epsilon=1/720) and C
-70(+) ion (epsilon=1/840) from 0.2 to 3.2 keV/amu with an APF and an opera
tion frequency of 10 MHz. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. [S0034-67
