Reactions with a heavy projectile incident on a light target can be used fo
r the efficient in-flight production of secondary radioactive beams. An ove
rview of this technique is given using data on F-17 beams produced via the
p(O-17, F-17)n and d(O-16, F-17)n reactions. With primary O-16,O-17 beam cu
rrents of 100 pnA, intensities of up to 2x10(6) F-17/s on target were achie
ved. Using this beam, the p(F-17,alpha)O-14 reaction was measured. (C) 2000
