Metallation of 9-bis(bromomethylene)-9N-fluorene with one equivalent o
f BuLi at -78 degrees C followed by quenching with 6,6-dicyclopropylfu
lvene and subsequent warming (room temperatue, 18 h) gave an adduct id
entified as compound 5 (similar to 70% yield). Under identical conditi
ons dimethylfulvene and cyclopropylmethylfulvene failed to give a simi
lar adduct. Simple and efficient syntheses of 9-bromomethylene- and 9-
bis(bromomethylene)-9H-fluorene are also described.
