A modified epsilon formalism is developed to perform thermodynamic analysis
for metallic solutions. The model calculation is successfully applied to d
escribe oxygen and nitrogen equilibria in both liquid iron and alloyed stee
l melts. Relations between oxygen activities or contents and composition of
Fe-O-X (X = Si, Cr, Ti and Al) melts are given quantitatively. The results
are widely supported by the available experimental results. Nitrogen solub
ilities in Fe-Cr and Fe-Cr-Ni melts predicted by the present model calculat
ion feature good agreement with experimental results.
