The change of specific volume due to isothermal decomposition of Fe-C auste
nite into ferrite and carbon enriched austenite above the A(1) temperature,
and subsequently into ferrite and cementite below the A(1) temperature, ha
s been calculated quantitatively, using recent lattice parameter data for t
he phases involved. Corresponding dilatometric experiments have been perfor
med for various Fe-C alloys. It follows that the measured relative length c
hanges by isothermal decomposition of austenite above and below the A(1) te
mperature are in good agreement with the calculated results.
