He. Praekelt et Ae. Schoch, STRATIGRAPHICAL SYNTHESIS OF THE METASEDIMENTS OF THE AGGENEYS TERRANE IN THE NAMAQUA MOBILE BELT, South African journal of geology, 100(1), 1997, pp. 85-100
The supracrustal sequence of the Aggeneys terrane is regarded as a sub
group of the Aggeneys Subgroup in the Bushman]and Group. The six forma
tions which were identified are in decreasing order of age (with maxim
um thicknesses in brackets): the Wortel (650 - 920 m), Witputs (230 m)
, Skelmpoort (47 - 58 m), T'hammaberg (270 m), Hotson (500 m), and Koe
ris (634 m) Formations. The uppermost part of the Hotson Formation (th
e Gams Member) is the host for the economically important stratabound
sulphide deposits. The Aggeneys Subgroup has been regionally metamorph
osed to amphibolite grade and severely deformed. The sequence consists
of quartz arenite (orthoquartzite), clay-rich rock (schist), arkose (
feldspathic gneiss with sporadic pebbles), conglomerate, calc-silicate
rock, banded iron formation, and tholeiitic lava (amphibolite). Derai
led stratigraphical columns for each formation illustrate the alternat
ion of the various rock types.
