Membrane based separation technology (MBST) is a selective permeation
technology which is practicable and economically attractive. It refers
to pressure driven separation of components of a fluid mixture by sel
ective permeation of the permeate (solvent with smaller molecule size)
from the retentate (solute with larger molecule size) through a semip
ermeable membrane. The present paper describes various membrane operat
ion techniques with special reference to Ultra Filtration (UF) and rev
erse osmosis (RO). Their vast applications in Industry are also discus
sed.
