Hydrometrocolpos is the result of secretions accumulating within the v
agina and uterus, Secretions accumulate as the result of obstruction o
f the genital tract by (1) an abnormal membrane (e.g., intact hymen, v
aginal membrane, or vaginal atresia) or (2) in association with urogen
ital sinus or cloacal maldevelopment. The condition begins in utero an
d is detected shortly after birth or at puberty when menses begins. Th
e condition is accurately diagnosed by US and its physiologic impact c
an be shown with renal scintigraphy.
