Abstract
The Third International Winds Workshop was held in Ascona, Switzerland . from 10 to 12 June 1996. The workshop was organized by the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETS AT), which represents the national weather services of 17 European cou ntries. The Swiss Meteorological Service was the local host. This thir d winds workshop followed previous meetings in Washington, D.C., in Se ptember 1991 and in Tokyo, Japan, in December 1993. The winds workshop s have been organized to broaden and formalize the cooperation among u sers and producers as understanding of the characteristics of satellit e-tracked winds increased and their use in numerical weather predictio n centers advanced. This report describes the organization of Internat ional Winds Workshops as part of the activities of the Coordination Gr oup for Meteorological Satellites and provides an executive summary of , and the recommendations from, the Third International Winds Workshop .
