The structural transition to a low-temperature tetragonal phase in La2
-xBaxCuO4 occurs at the hole concentration p approximately 1/8. We hav
e studied the structural and electrical properties of La2-y-xNdyBaxCuO
4 with x = 0.125 to clarify the effect of substitution by trivalent io
ns. The substitution by Nd3+ enhances the structural transition temper
ature without changing of p. This enhancement is qualitatively explain
ed by the crystallochemical origin.
