We study the statistics of turbulent velocity fluctuations in the neighbour
hood of a strong large-scale vortex at large Reynolds number. At integral s
cale, the vortex dynamics can be either stable or unstable. We observe that
at each distance from the vortex core, the velocity spectrum has a power l
aw "inertial range" of scales and that intermittency is also present. The t
exture of turbulence is also influenced by the large-scale dynamics of the
vortex: as measurements are made closer to the core the spectrum scaling ex
ponents, the energy transfert rate (estimated via the third-order structure
function) and the intermittency characteristics follow different evolution
s in each regime.
