Abstract
Oral consumption of probiotic bacteria has the potential to support the hea lth of American consumers. This paper will discuss the rationale of the pro biotic theory, several health targets for probiotic bacteria, probiotic pro ducts in the U.S. and, finally, issues pertaining to communication about pr obiotic products to the consumer.
