Breast disorders in the pediatric and adolescent population cover a wide ra
nge of complaints, and although very few are life-threatening, they may be
a source of considerable distress to the girl concerned. These patients may
present to family practice physicians, surgeons, pediatricians, and gyneco
logists, all of whom may play a role in the diagnosis and management of the
underlying complaint. All practitioners involved in the care of patients i
n this population must have an understanding of the common breast disorders
, including their presentation and options for management. With the ever-ex
panding field of molecular biology and genetic diagnosis, it is likely that
the daughters of women who have had breast cancer, or who are genetic carr
iers of the disease, are seeking medical advice regarding appropriate medic
al options. This article addresses the management of breast disorders with
these concerns in mind.
