The detectability of the image of an object immersed in a scattering medium
and transilluminated by a multi-mode laser pulse can be enhanced by cross-
correlating the transmitted field with a fraction of the incident one in a
beta-barium berate crystal. We show that this effect arises from the interp
lay of the temporal coherence properties of the interacting fields, even in
the presence of a modest coherence such as that of a Q-switched Nd:YAG las
er pulse. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
