Knowledge concerning the pathogenesis of HIV infection and its clinical man
agement has evolved rapidly since the global emergence of this infection in
the human population 2 decades ago. This article focuses on the pathogenet
ic features of pediatric HIV infection that affect therapy and decision mak
ing, on the antiretroviral drugs available for children and current approac
hes to their use, and on some therapeutic options that may be available in
the near future.
