Adolescence is a dynamic time of life, defined by physical, emotional, cogn
itive, and social transitions. Many of these transitions increase adolescen
t vulnerability to HIV infection while necessitating unique approaches to t
reatment. This article reviews the epidemiology of HIV and AIDS in adolesce
nts; guidelines for clinical practice with HIV-infected adolescents, includ
ing medical and psychosocial care; and recommendations for adolescent outre
ach, counseling, testing, and prevention.
