We investigate an extended chiral soliton model which includes pi, rho, ome
ga and sigma mesons as explicit degrees of freedom. The Lagrangian incorpor
ates chiral symmetry and broken scale invariance. A scalar-isoscalar sigma-
meson is associated with a quarkonium dilaton field with a mass m(sigma) ap
proximate to 550...720 MeV. We show that the inclusion of the scalar field
slightly changes the static and electromagnetic properties of the nucleon.
In contrast, it plays a significant role in nucleon-nucleon dynamics and gi
ves an opportunity to describe well the two-nucleon interaction. (C) 2000 P
