In this article, the clinical phenomenon of transference love is used to ma
ke 3 contributions: (a) to illustrate how the intersubjective held can enco
mpass more than just patient and therapist, (b) to provide an intersubjecti
ve framework for understanding transference love, and (c) to demonstrate ho
w selfobject and antidote functions of the therapeutic relationship can alt
ernate within the same patient-therapist dyad as figure and ground.
