A summary of the main steps towards the implementation of anti-HIV testing
for pregnant women in the city is presented. Starting from August 1996, vol
untary HIV testing became available to pregnant women seen at primary healt
h centers in Ribeirao Preto, SP (Brasil), as part of the Prenatal care Prog
ram. By the end of 1998, 68.3% of the 17,589 women seeking prenatal care ha
d been tested, resulting in a positivity rare of 0.76%.
