Single crystals of N alpha-acetyl L-glutamic acid and N alpha-acetyl L
-glutamine were gamma-irradiated and the paramagnetic species formed w
ere investigated at room temperature by electron spin resonance techni
que. The observed species in N alpha-acetyl L-glutamic acid single cry
stal were attributed to the, HOOCCH2CH2(C) over dot(NHCOCH3)COOH radic
al; and those in N alpha-acetyl L-glutamine single crystal to the NH2C
OCH2CH2(C) over dot(NHCOCH3)COOH and NH2COCH2CH2CH(NHCOCH3)(C) over do
t<(O)over bar OH> radicals. The g values and the hyperfine coupling co
nstants of the unpaired electron with the environmental methylene, met
hine protons and N-14 nucleus were determined. (C) 1997 Elsevier Scien
