Tribology design is discussed in a general sense to utilize new possibiliti
es provided by the development of systems engineering of tribe-systems. The
contents, target acid characteristics of tribology design are discussed. I
t is emphasized that the tribology design cannot be understood only as the
design of tribe-pairs, but also as friction plus wear plus lubrication. Res
ults in the design of rotor-bearing-sealing-gear systems, thrust-bearing sy
stems, piston-rings-cylinder liner systems, active magnetic bearings and a
smart tribe-material (or structure) in China are introduced. A Tribology De
sign Division and a division for building a China Tribology Database have b
een established in the Tribology Institution, CMES. The National Natural Sc
ience Foundation of China provides strong financial support in such activit
