Hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus, Hemiechinus auritus) infested with Sarcopte
s scabiei were caught in three zoological gardens and in three small rumina
nt farms (one sheep and two goats) where sarcoptic mange was diagnosed. The
infested hedgehogs might have served as a reservoir of S. scabiei for the
domestic and wild ruminants in these sites. It is suggested that hedgehogs
might play a role in the epidemiology of sarcoptic mange.
