M. Nair et al., HEAVY-METALS IN FISHES FROM COASTAL WATERS OF COCHIN, SOUTHWEST COASTOF INDIA, Indian journal of marine sciences, 26(1), 1997, pp. 98-100
The concentration levels of copper, zinc, manganese and iron have been
determined in marine fishes from Cochin area which is one of the majo
r fishing zones along the west coast of India. The concentration of he
avy metals varied from species to species. Copper, Zn, Fe and Mn showe
d increased levels in the gills and alimentary canal compared to the m
uscle. Difference in heavy metal concentration in various species stud
ied is attributed to the varying feeding habits. The observed levels w
ere below the toxic limit.
