Bisphosphonates are compounds with a high affinity for calcium-contain
ing crystals. They inhibit osteoclast function. This has lead to their
use in disorders characterized by increased bone resorption, such as
osteoporosis, Paget's disease, certain forms of hypercalcemia, myeloma
, and metastatic solid tumors. Bisphosphonates are available in both o
ral and intravenous forms. Gastrointestinal toxicity and mineralizatio
n defects are concerns with some forms of bisphosphonates. This articl
e will review both currently ap proved and potential uses for bisphosp
honates.
