The asymmetry of the W-induced refractive-index profile in photosensitive o
ptical fibers causes a deformation of the modal fields, resulting in transi
tion losses between W-exposed and unexposed fiber sections up to 0.1 dB for
W-induced index changes of the order of less than or equal to 10(-2) A num
erical analysis of the transition losses is developed. It is verified exper
imentally that the loss is caused by coupling of power of the fundamental m
ode to cladding modes at such a transition. (C) 2000 Optical Society of Ame
