We report on a poling process of soda-lime glasses that reduces their surfa
ce conductivity by five orders of magnitude. We show that this process enab
les the in-plane poling of high T-g (180 degrees C) electro-optic (EO) poly
mers coated on ion-exchanged channel waveguides fabricated in soda-lime gla
sses for hybrid modulators. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. [S0003-
