Atypical furunculosis caused by atypical Aeromonas salmonicida is an increa
sing problem in commercial halibut farming, and a potential problem in farm
ing of spotted wolffish in Norway. Halibut, Hippoglossus hippoglossus L., a
nd spotted wolffish, Anarhichas minor L., vaccinated with oil-emulsified va
ccines against atypical furunculosis, demonstrated a relative percent survi
val (RPS) of approximately 90 when challenged with homologous isolates. Bat
h and aqueous injection vaccines failed to protect against disease when cha
llenged 10 weeks post-vaccination. High antibody titres were produced in bo
th species after vaccination with oil-emulsified vaccines, and the major an
tibody response were against A-layer, LPS and some minor outer membrane (OM
) proteins. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
