Giant magnetoresistance(GMR) is actively investigated for high density
magnetic recording. In particular, so-called sandwich films which ado
pts a simple structure such as Co/Cu/Co has large magnetoresistive rat
io. We have attempted to improve the sensitivity and the saturation fi
eld of Si/CoOx/Co/Cu/NiFe sandwich films with CoOx layer made by react
ive sputtering. In the sandwich films with magnetic CoOx layer, the sa
turation field increases but the sensitivity decreases. Substituting n
onmagnetic CoOx layer for the magnetic CoOx layer larger saturation fi
eld and higher sensitivity can be obtained.
