C. De Champs et al., Decreased susceptibility to extended-spectrum cephalosporins of a penicillin-susceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae in meningitis, INFECTION, 28(1), 2000, pp. 58-59
A 69-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital with meningitis due to Str
eptococcus pneumoniae, The strain was susceptible to penicillin but interme
diate to cefotaxime, In Europe the decrease of susceptibility generally per
tains more to penicillin than to cefotaxime, Such a strain is perhaps a for
ewarning of the existence of high-level cephalosporin-resistant strains. De
spite the possible detection of the resistance by oxacillin disk, it underl
ines the need to determine the MICs of different beta-lactams without delay
and to choose the most efficient treatment.
